You could tell us more, like what kind of camera you are using and
whether or not you are using tele-extenders.

In the mean time I note from
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/tamron-150-600-5-6p3
"... he lens has a decidedly slow maximum aperture, starting at F5 and
dropping to F6.3 at full telephoto". This could have something to do
with your problem.

Thanks for replying. It's on a 5D Mark II. Aperture, shutter speed, VC on
or off, even on a tripod, makes no difference. Of course at f22 it's less
out of focus but still unacceptable. Also, it's not confined to max focal
length, although at shorter focal lengths it's marginally better.
