Discussion:
Pogue leaving NYT for ...

Hate him or despise him - or even like him from time to time, Pogue is
leaving the NYT for - wait for it - Yahoo.

The Yahoo site he'll run will be "consumer-focused technology" which I
guess will have some photography amongst the widgets.

This is a major coup for Yahoo IMO as they try hard to revive their
relevance - I can only imagine that Pogue is being very handsomely
compensated for the move from the higher brow NYT to the
infotainmentology of Yahoo.

I suspect he'll do well in drawing a lot of people back who have pretty
much abandoned Yahoo.

Well he does have a fair knowledge base and set of credentials, and
isn't ignorant when it comes to things Apple. However, his
qualifications to discuss things photographic are questionable at best
and I don't think he will be drawn in that direction too often.

At least he isn't John Dvorak in another suit.

Damn, you took the words right out of my mouth. Dvorak was one of the
worst tech writers in history. My two favorite predictions of his:

How he stayed employed is beyond me.

Curb your mouth. John Dvorak is at best a very distant relation to

This is different from your contribution to the thread, how? Is this how
you improve your photography?

Tony tries to tell us that he isn't a troll and whines a lot when his
actions show him to be one. I am doing him the courtesy of letting him
know just what actions of his that earns him that moniker. You will
notice how I compared his trolling action against the non-trolling
action from nospam to whom he was replying. That is a claim from me and
substantiation.

You, on the other hand, join threads only to add ad hominems as much as
possible. You never substantiate and never have any point to this. Your
posts are mostly incoherent and lack an actual point.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical of you to jump in and point out that I am
calling Tony a troll when you didn't jump in when Tony called nospam an
"ignoramus" - a post he clearly did out of the blu with the only
intention to personally insult nospam.

Now scurry along and ignore reality like you always do, Peter.

I would think that in programming certain characters are used more
frequently than the characters used for writing novels. e.g. In novel
writing there is far less use of braces, brackets, numerals &
parenthesis, than in programming. Writing a math paper requires
extensive use of math symbols. etc.

depends on the programming language. sometimes there can be more
symbols than in a novel, such as with objective-c. other languages are
more english-like. either way, there is still a lot of text and
comments.

on the other hand, it's less than in something like math, chemistry or
many other textbooks.

not that it matters, since code completion significantly reduces the
amount of actual typing needed and a lot of an app's design is now done
visually anyway.

not even remotely close.

dvorak does not make up shit because he thinks he is really a practical
joker or that his blog is really the onion. he doesn't make up stories
about nikon using whale penises in their cameras. he just writes
provocative columns designed to push people's buttons, and it obviously
works.

And he's _stupid_. I realized that when he was talking about this
incredible new invention, the "Chang modification" that made any
computer run ten times as fast. I knew from his description that all it
did was diddle the realtime clock so that the benchmarks reported a
false result, but he was too _stupid_ to see that until it came out
later that that was the case.

Well if he isn't serious enough about his alleged craft to give us no
more than a "schtick", then there is no reason to take him seriously in
any way. He wears his damaged credibility like a crown.

FWIW, I live in tobacco country--the farms around here grow the finest
cigar wrapper in the world, so I see "tobacco free" as just another form
of do-gooderism.

I am not a cigar smoker, and never have been. I thought Cuba was
considered the source of the best cigar wrapper, but that's all
hearsay to me.

I've seen cigars rolled, and know that the wrapper is different from
the filler. Is it the wrapper, the filler, or the combination that
makes a good cigar?

No, the best Cuban cigars had Connecticut shade tobacco for wrapper, the
Communists came in and God forbid tht the US do business with
Communists. Personally I think that doing business with Cuba is far
less damaging to the US than doing business with China but nobody asked
me.

Or perhaps the Cuban lady's thigh on which it is rolled?

Well, my father was born in GA and raised in NC, though the family was
never involved in the NC tobacco industry. My Grandfather was a textile
mill loom repair/maintenance machinist and followed the work from GA to
NC and on to Utica NY.

...but in Murrow's case, tobacco killed him.

No it doesn't. Dvorak's outrageous incompetence hasn't tempted to read
anything he has written for years.

He does Podcasts?
OK that is something else I don't need to subscribe to.

maybe not you but it does for a lot of people

it does have you talking about him in many posts, so he's succeeded in
some capacity.

just because you don't read every column doesn't mean he failed.

he used to do a video podcast called cranky geeks (great title), which
was him and 2-3 guests from the tech industry, talking about various
tech topics. among the guests were john markoff of the new york times,
larry lessig, om malik (founder of gigaom.com) and many others.

now he does one with adam curry and he is a guest on other podcasts.

he's not really that different from many people in the industry who say
things to get attention. for web sites, it's called link bait.

it's a formula and it works and he's not the only person to use it.

I don't believe he intentionally said things to beef up ratings. I do
believe he's a clueless idiot.

His photography stuff is tuned to the convenience crowd, not the
"serious shooter" (whateverthehellthatis) crowd - and at that he does a
good enough job. To his credit he hones in on product weaknesses very
well no matter how nifty the overall device is.
